Over the last couple of months my love for Bookstagram has grown tremendously. I am a woman deranged, dragging a tote bag filled with books everywhere and using any and every opportunity to take bookish photos. I’m addicted and will probably have severe withdrawal symptoms if something happens to my phone. I am so obsessed that I actually got an iPhone because after experimenting with my sister’s phone I realised that the iPhone had a better camera and I needed a better camera for my booktography… I know, it doesn’t seem healthy, but goddammit! It’s so much fun!
In case you don’t what Bookstagram is, (OMG, where do you live? Under a rock at the bottom of the ocean? Are you Patrick Star?) it is the Instagram bookish community, dedicated to posting aesthetically pleasing pictures of bookish things, also well as recommending, review and discussing literature.
These are some of the reasons why I LOVE Bookstagram and why you should give it a try!
Firstly, the community is so welcoming, supportive, talented and inspiring. There are no pretenses; it is literally just a community filled with people who adore reading. All of these people are such talented photographers, they’re so creative and some of them are so young. It amazes me everyday when find a new account and drool over their awesome pictures.
A sense of belonging
I’ve always loved books and literature, but as a kid I never really found a space that just works for me. When I joined the Bookstagram I finally found that place I’d been looking for back in my teenage years. These are my people. I can be my honest and true self with this community and that is more than I can ask for. It has truly help me accept the fact that I am undeniably a nerd and I love it!
Making bookish friends
I have made so many like-minded friends on Bookstagram, even if they do encourage my book buying problem. These are friends I can fangirl/boy with and not feel like I am being weird.
Worried that most of these friends are located half-way across the world? You’d be surprised by how fast the South African Bookstagram community is growing. In fact, last month all of the Cape Townian bookstagrammers and book blogger met up for the first time and for a bunch of introverts we really kicked ass at socialising! Don’t worry, we’ll be doing it again.
Taking pictures, editing them, writing the perfect caption and using the right hash tags can be super time consuming but it is completely worth it. I normally choose a day and spend a couple of hours taking loads of pictures for the week. I really enjoy expressing creativity through photography. It is challenging but so rewarding.
And last but not least, the book recommendations are phenomenal! These pictures will make you want to buy every single book, but don’t fall into that trap, unless you’re willing to starve to death. At least you’ll die surrounded by all your book!
Some of my favourite books were initially bought because I kept seeing them on bookstagram.
