Every now and then I find myself craving for a quick read, something to clean my palette. For me that normally comes in the form of a guilty pleasure and can range anywhere from reading an old favourite to reading a cheesy Wattpad story.
After reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes I kind of needed a major pick me and so I gravitated towards Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover because it seemed like it would be a quick and easy read.
Sydney is studying to become a music teacher, she lives with her best friend and is dating a decent guy. That is until she finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with her roommate/best friend and she basically becomes homeless on her 22nd birthday. She ends up crashing on her neighbour Ridge’s couch and help him get over his writer’s block by writing lyrics to him music.
While it was an enjoyable and an easy read it kind of reminded me of a semi-decent Wattpad novel. It was all fluffy and cute and there were moments that had me going “aw…” but the writing felt clumsy which resulted in an excessive amount of eye-rolling on my part. This does not mean I did not enjoy it, rather that I had very different expectations after having had heard so many great things about Colleen Hoover’s work.
I really enjoyed the fact that there was a soundtrack to the novel. It definitely made the experience of reading it unique. I had some moral issues with the overall plot, but I don’t think I can discuss it without spoiling it. Other than that I think it was pleasant read, one of those read-in-one-sitting, perfect rainy-day-reads.
