This weeks Top Ten Tuesday topic is a Back to School Freebie, apparently the Northern hemisphere starts a new school year today. Here in the Southern Hemisphere we’re heading for Spring which means we’re entering the last term of the school year. I decided to go with the ‘Required Reading for all Fantasy Fans suggestion, duh. Fantasy is my go to genre, and here it is!

Required Reading for all Fantasy Fans

The Modern Classics and High Fantasy

Fantasy covers

Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling – This one is an obvious one. If you haven’t read then it goes without that you need to do something about that.

The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan – I read this trilogy when I was in high school and was looking for something to fill the hole while I waited for the next Harry Potter novel to be released.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman – This series was a major part of my Fantasy education as a child, however I feel like it doesn’t matter how old you are, this series is worth reading. It is dark. This series along with Harry Potter pioneered what would we know as modern crossover fantasy. (YA fantasy)

Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis – Another series that made me fall in love with Fantasy as a child, also a major influence in the development of Fantasy in general.

Dragonmaster by Chris Bunch – If you love dragons as much as I do then this series is a must read.

Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien – Confession time… As I mentioned in last week’s Top Ten Tuesday post I have not read LOTR yet but it is on the top of my TBR list. I have included it because I am aware of it’s importance within Fantasy.

YA Fantasy

YA fantasy covers

Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas – This is one of the most popular YA fantasy series at the moment and I understand that it might not be the hardcore Fantasy lover’s cup of teas but I do think that this is the perfect series to introduce you to Fantasy. The first novel is relatively light and an easy read. However, as the series develops it does become more High Fantasy.

The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini – I love Paolini’s dragons and I love the world he has created.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy by Laini Taylor – Taylor’s prose is beautiful, her world building is detailed and her characters are complex.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – This multi-perspective fantasy novel has recently been added to my favourites. It is extremely well written, fast paced and filled with action.

Yay!! I loved Six of Crows, and I am quite enjoying the Throne of Glass series too. I am currently reading Harry Potter (again) which I am enjoying! I am really into fantasy lately, which is making it hard to read from other genres… I’m loving it though :p
